I have got my own , unbiassed private exposure to using weed, and regardless of how often users mention “it’s beneficial with this” and “great for that”, Let me tell you that it virtually wrecked my life man! Look, I do know there are people who are able to simply up and stop smoking, nevertheless there’s lots of others that definitely have the most difficult time wanting to quit smoking bud. The root downside to being hooked on pot is that the habit is a mental one, definitely not physical.

Like the article says, there is a decent portion of the population that has an addictive personality. That may or may not be your case, but it’s not something to blame on the herb. It’s the fact that almost any individual who spends years working themselves into a solid routine have a difficult time breaking it.

This is no different than trying to get yourself back to the gym after years of inactivity. It’s simply a matter of breaking your hardened routine and sticking to it.

Alcohol, guns, autos, porn, food, power, and so on can wreck people’s lives when used with little discretion.

Are we to assume pot is bad because you and others haven’t the will or desire to control your damn selves?

Blaming your character flaws on weed is a cheap shot and you need to face the fact that this isn’t about pot- it is about you.

Christ, addicts are all the same.

          Audry –

What is your point? You had a mental habit for a substance, and you blame the substance? Bad form. Don’t hate on the plant because it is your own weakness at fault.

Saying the substance wrecked your life is a little off…but on the beneficial thing I kinda agree, it only is for SOME people. All it REALLY does for me is get me high, I’m not a medical user and I’m not gonna bullshit people by saying it makes me a better person or helps my memory (haha) or whatever…

I agree, the most devastating downside is the mental habit it creates. I’ve quit for three weeks now and i’m having a hard time assimilating to normal life. Although I will say I’m probably part of the 10% of the population mentioned in the article, I just wish I had realized it prior to picking up the habit.

It’s unfortunate to hear that , Audrey. While you had a bad personal experience from marijuana abuse, proper education about the substance, along with the reduced stigmatization that would follow with a hypothetical legalization of marijuana may have stopped that from happening in the first place. Keep in mind, alcohol wrecks more families, kills many more people, and is legal in most parts of the world.

On a side note: Some people start smoking habitually to insulate themselves from something negative in their lives, be it a trait within themselves, or a situation in their world. Louis Armstrong called marijuana “an insulator against the pain of racism. I guess what I’m getting at is that the psychological aspects of marijuana addiction are often caused by negative personal-outlooks and bad world-surroundings. With proper education and counseling, the numbers of people addicted to marijuana and other substances could be reduced significantly.

Psychological addiction is a serious problem, but nothing that could be fixed or changed through the (non)legalization pot. People under psychological duress will find something to block the world out–if it’s not marijuana it would be something else, maybe alcohol, maybe stronger, scarier drugs…

Consider too, that an addiction to something else, something more dangerous, could have killed you.

you all are making great points in response to Audrey. Louis Armstrong also called marijuana an assistant, and a friend. To me all drugs are much scarier than marijuana. Since I was young, I was scared of chemicals. Never for a moment could a plant scare me…I used to think my memory, my inability to keep organized…everything I thought was a problem, I thought must be because I smoked a little pot. The stigma had given my this mindset. Then, I didn’t smoke for two years in the early 90′s. Cabin in the woods. Didn’t know anyone out there that smoked. Well, when I DID smoke again….I learned that it was, and always had been, my helper, not my hinderer. I was more organized and more able to get through my responsibilities, as a single, self supporting parent of three, with marijuana. It was my assistant and friend. I learned this at 34 yrs. old.
I have never had any addiction to it that I can perceive. I feel better if I have an option, this is true.

audrey: Would your desire to use pot have “virtual wrecked your life” if it were something you could buy at the corner store, know what was in it an what strength it was, and products to help you with quitting if you wanted to and found it difficult existed? “Mental” addictions aren’t addictions. As the pamphlet accurately states, it is easier to become “addicted” to sugar, chocolate, or coffee. If you had to buy coffee from a drug dealer, and it was a federal felony to own even a tiny amount of coffee, how might the life experience of a coffee drinker be different?

As for legalizing and taxing it, I say no way. Legalize it, but do not tax it. Sales tax is the only tax that is justifiable for marijuana. We tax alcohol and tobacco in order to reduce their usage and to help pay to repair the damage done to society by their users. Marijuana users do not do damage to society that needs repaired, and it is not dangerous to the health so there is no need whatsoever for the government to support usage reduction efforts. Unless you can justify a tax on marijuana, don’t agree to one. And no “it would make a lot of money” isn’t a reason. Why not tax pudding, or celery then? That would make money too. Marijuana is as harmless as pudding or celery, and the only limitations that should be put on it should be ones determined by scientific evidence. If there is no scientific evidence that it harms children or adolescents, then you have no justification to ban them from it. If there is no scientific evidence that it harms adults, then you have no justification to try to stop adults from using it. This shouldn’t be difficult. We’re supposed to view freedom as the default state, not regulation.
