tive and medically necessary substances. Think about it. For 70 years we have not been able to study one of the most healing and beneficial plants in the world, simply because we were told not to.
Since prohibition was launched, the medical and clinical benefits of marijuana have remained largely unstudied, save for a couple of rogue scientists and physicians who actually took their Hippocratic Oath with sincerity. The War on Drugs has been effective in keeping marijuana out of the hands of scientists and scholars, while failing to keep the drug out of the hands of minors. The statement from the American Medical Association comes late in the game of Medical Marijuana, with many states already accepting the valid use of marijuana as medicine. The reluctance of our government to allow the study and investigation of marijuana has left thousands of terminally ill people out in the cold, waiting for the one thing we need. Information.
There is no doubt that marijuana is medicine to millions and the decision to support the already rampant use with factual evidence and scientifically structured standards is exciting for many. Imagine the possibilities when this plant is adequately investigated and researched, Imagine the strides in medicine and wellness for the population. This statement from the AMA has offered a thread of hope to those of us wishing the world would wake up and accept the truth but it is also a much broader message of hope to an entire
world frought with diseases and death. It’s statement is far-reaching, calling for the very same thing so many sick people are calling for. Compassion, research, education and finally, intelligent discussion.
The current list of qualifying ailments that are covered by the medical marijuana laws in Colorado is short and clearly lacking in honesty. If the people writing the law really knew everything that cannabis has been proven to help, (with effective use and years of personal researchers across the world and across the span of time) the list would include everything ranging from depression and PTSD to migraines and anxiety. The benefits from marijuana alone would cover nearly all disorders across the spectrum of psychological afflictions and physical ailments such as headaches, insomnia, restless legs and sexual dysfunction. The medical necessity of many pharmaceutical drugs will be in question when the common person can cure a migraine headache or their PMS cramps with the use of a plant they grow in their backyard.
The American Medical Associations decision to urge reclassification has a broad and far-reaching message. Clearly, we were wrong to stop the investigation of cannabinoids for so long, and I am grateful that the AMA has decided to take a stand against the clear discrimination of such a beautiful and life giving plant.
Good on ya, AMA. AntiSoccermom approves.
What do you think? How will the AMA’s decision affect you?

YESSSSSSSS~! FINALLY!
One huge step in the right direction, as I see it. Think about it this way, even if they came up with the outlandish conclusion that marijuana doesnt help, at least we have the knowledge already that it does and can push to have legalisation for everyone.
Woot Woot! Rad girl, this absolutely excites me! Thats not the first time Ive been excited on this site though.
It seems like a good step, dear, but the devil is in the details. Read the last parts of their statement:
“The AMA’s goal in changing its policy is to clear the way for clinical research, development of marijuana-based medicines, and creation of alternate ways to deliver the drug.”
Alternate ways of delivering the drug means no more smoking or … Read Morevaporizors. That is the cracked door that Big Pharma will put it’s foot into. Their goal will be to run the legal caregivers out of the supply chain and make the delivery systems nebulizers and pills that will only be able to be manufactured by large pharma companies. When regs are passed (and they won’t be in violation of Amendment 20 when they do) they will make it so that the caregivers are once more made illegal and big business will own the med pot business. The AMA will go along with it.
isn’t it appealing to think maybe the AMA are not evil dickheads ?
YesIah- Thats kind of the way Im thinking about it!
even tho in soberness we know they are … ?

It is an appealing notion… but they are just paving the way for a big business take over of the current industry. Declassification is NOT on the way. The money will only be made as long at it remains classified (wrongly) the same as narcotics. Growers are wary of this, guys like Warren Edson are wary, guys like Allen St. Pierre with NORML are … Read Morewary. This is not necessarily good news and they DO NOT intend this to lead to legalization only to the doctors and pharma giants controlling the legal distribution of medicine.

lets not let our gaurds down because of what they say.the pharms still sponsor and dictate what our docs learn in med school.if they do something i WILL get excited. untill then its great progress but just words.
if its still a question why are the pharms in speedy trials for more pills that contain canibis.
Chad is spot on. It is hard not to be cynical knowing all I know about the genisis of this movement over the last 20 years. I really think MERP is “the” only way that makes sense:

Yep
My most royal Hemptress December,
fact is, that declassification is going to happen, just as clemency for all cannabis patients and caregivers must happen.
As to smoking or vaporizing- it is clear, that for those patients with conditions that must be relieved quickly, smoking and/or vaporizing will continue to be the choice…. Read More
As for those cannabis patients that do not need almost instant relief, it seems to me that I recall a host of other ways that can be found, many where big pharma has no possible stake.
Like say a cookie, or maybe one of Dennis Peron’s Chocolate Dream bars dipped into some fresh cannabis peanut butter, or perhaps as a pesto on your pasta. My favorite form of the medicine, ’supra tincture’ . extremely quick acting, relief can be had in minutes, and when used as a multi dosage per day, the effects can last 24/7, so that waiting to get relief is no longer an issue.
What is the meaning of all this? We must not allow fear to take us off our true course, even when it is justified to be afraid.
Yes, forces in the world will attempt to make synthetics of each and every cannabinoid that exists, and every combination of them . As I recall, of the sixty or so that have been isolated, over ten have already been made into synthetics.
Should big pharma count the remaining fifty of them, and then count all the different combinations they can appear in, and then multiply by ten thousand, for all the strains that are said to exist in the world, they will
have a whole lot of lab work ahead of them.
I say, why try to stop them? While the enlightened go with the natural sources, big pharma will try to muscle in with their synthetics, but then is this really any different then what we have seen before in other situations.
The solution will be to insist that a choice between the synthetics and natural sources remains the patients. This will mean more patient coop’s to offset the oncoming corporate Rx wave, and enough support in Congress to protect the coop as a form of access.
To say it in one sentence, do not fear, but be certain to remember, that cannabis politics is a permanent
campaign.
MERP doesn’t help me at all (My wife won’t let me grow). Nor does it help seriously ill patients who are unable to grow their own. Since many people will be unable to grow sufficient herb for their own needs, the claims that MRPP will defund gangs and cartels can not be met with MRPP alone.
MERP compares the right to grown unlimited amounts of … Read Moreherb to the right to make beer and wine at home. Federal law limits the amount of bear and wine that can be produced at home.
While I support the MRPP concept including the ability to grow a reasonably large quantity of herb for personal use, we must be accurate in our claims lest our voices shout exaggerated dogma as our opponents have done for the last 70 years.
HAHA, we are way ahead of them.
I prefer to keep my opinion on the AMA’s decision. I believe that even if legalization doesnt happen, the study of marijuana is still incredibly vital to the entire human race. I am thinking globally, how will this decision affect humans as a whole? Perhaps the united states will always remain so far behind, but that doesnt mean I will stop using … Read Morecannabis or fighting for the rights of others to do so. Thank you for your comments, I appreciate the interaction, but please try to remember that I am not a politician, I am just a young lady trying to figure out the intricate details of marijuana prohibition all on my own. Encouragement is appreciated, but please dont attack me. Its exhausting and threatens everything I do.
Finally. Steps in the right direction. Thanks for this excellent reporting. http://www.thymeforhemp.viviti.com | Visit us to learn more about the healing and health benefits of hemp.
