Dj Am may be dead, but MTV wants him remembered as a hypocrite

Last night I caught that show ” Gone too Far” with Adam Goldstein, otherwise known as Dj Am, that kid who overdosed earlier this year on a potent cocktail of oxycodon, ativan, klonipin, vicodin, xanax, and cocain. I liked Dj Am before watching the show, and even felt pangs of empathy for his struggle with drugs. Unfortunately, after watching the show and seeing the guy lie directly to the camera, to other struggling addicts and clearly, to HIMSELF, I cant help but feel sickened. There was a good five minute conversation between the young lady the show was about, and Dj Am where he explained how he started No-MTVusing drugs and how he ultimately beat addiction and gained sobriety. Adam was struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder and clearly fighting his own demons. This young man needed his own intervention and his own stint in rehab, not a television show exploiting the lives of other young people in the grips of denial. Hollywood is so busy glorifying addiction while our health care system is quietly sweeping the addicts under the rug. This show was meant to help struggling drug addicts seek appropriate treatment. Instead- Due to the unfortunate death of the host- it has become a modern day study on hypocritical liars. Yes, Im calling out a dead guy. Yes, Im saying he was a hypocrite, clearly lying to the world to hide his terrible secret. While this has the potential to show how devastating drugs can be to a person, it just seems tasteless.  Maybe its too soon, but I think the network airing this “documentary” knows exactly what they are doing by exploiting the cracks in this young man’s personality. Shame on you MTV. A television channel with so much pull on the nations youth should be held to a higher standard and should possibly do a little fact checking before they start airing shows about dead addicts. Addiction is a serious health concern and while I enjoy shows like “intevention” and “celebrity rehab” for the sheer reminder of how low drugs will make a person go, I would never support this show. At least they got the name right, Mtv really has “Gone too far.”

It was very sad to see a person struggle with addiction like that. And he tried. But it didn’t work out so well. As far as MTV, they come up with a show called real world, and all they do is get blitz drunk, everyone screws everyone in that show. But they wouldn’t let an MJ joke from Seth Rogan And Franco because it send a bad message? WOW. So let me get this straight MTV, MJ bad, Drinking until you’re liver fails at 23 and getting STD’s are ok? Classy lol

When I first read this, I was a bit taken aback, I’ll admit. I think it hit a nerve because of addiction struggles in my fam (and I even cleaned myself up a for a little bit there). So I understood how he could have gone back to drugs after the trauma of that plane crash.

But I just watched an episode of that show and, man, it fu*kin’ bothers me. I mean, it’s a good anti-drug commercial but it’s patronizing, dude. I kinda came around to this post after actually viewing the product.

I think the whole series is trite and overplayed, I wish they had put money into helping that young man heal himself, rather than exploiting him as a drug addict even after his death. Thank you for reading.

I think that sometimes through work with others you find your own pathway in life. I think Adam was an advocate for sobriety but he struggled with post traumatic stress syndrome from the plane crash and being a former addict it was a challenge to wean himself from the pain killers prescribed through that ordeal. I don’t think he’s hypocritical, I think his death shows the world, and the addicts from, “Gone to Far” that addiction is a life long struggle that doesn’t end with even 10 years of sobriety. It’s easy to slip up, but at the end of the day he helped people, showed them a way out, gave them another chance, and just because he died doesn’t mean that legacy and his initiatives should be tarnished. Shame on you!
