No kidding! Since when has abstinence EVER worked?! Most kids nowadays learned more sex education on a five minute bus ride to school in the back of the bus than they learn in 4 years in high school. Sex Ed, what a fucking joke!
I think ultimately the responsibility starts and ends with the parents.

I don’t believe Abstinence Education (alone) is the answer. Yes, it is something that can be talked about, but far too many people believe that if abstinence is presented as the only form of education, that all kids will be abstinent. That’s a flat out joke. I wholly endorse what you said here.

That is true December, but the main problem with parents is that they try to shelter their kids all the time, never let them have any life experiences, and then expect them to be street smart by experiencing life throught tv or an equivalent to that. Not to mention they never talk about anything with their kids or explain anything.
I agree. Far too many parents are relying on the school system to teach their children, but the school system is acting like a bunch of bratty two year olds with their fingers in their collective ears screaming “I can’t hear you!” Its scary really. I always knew what a condom was, and I was put on BC @ 16 by my mom, even though I wasn’t having sex. She wanted me to be prepared, even though she didn’t think me having sex was the best idea at the time. Teaching abstinence only is about as effective as telling two teenagers that what they are feeling isn’t love. It may be altogether true, but they’re not listening anyways. Better to prepare them than have to set up the spare room for junior.

Look at Bristol Palin, that’s a great example of abstinence programs not working. Sarah Palin was a huge supporter of programs like that, yet she couldn’t even get her own daughter to keep her pants on!
And that is why my mother had a talk with myself and my brothers (I’m the only daughter of three kids). She told my brothers that anytime they needed to talk or needed something to let her know. So if they had a problem or needed condoms, they could have gone to her, but I don’t believe they ever did haha. I did have the unfortunate day I found the box of condoms in my brother’s glove compartment of his car, and got really grossed out, but at least he was being safe. My rebel brother accidentally got his girlfriend pregnant, but they were 24 and 25, so it wasn’t crazy young. Unfortunately they were way too unprepared, and luckily my brother has stepped up and done a great job so far raising my nephew.
However, anyone who believes abstinence is the only way to teach kids, is crazy. A girl in my night class last semester tried to say that, and immediately all the hands in the class went up, and we all said the same thing, “Yea, if you want a lot of teenage pregnancies and a lot of teens with STD’s, safe sex is better to teach”

What cracks me up are these flash in the pan teen idols preaching abstinence and then come out a few years later saying it was a lie.
